How much do you trust your employees? Do you feel if you weren’t there work would not get done? Imagine the owner of a company who trusted her employees so much that when it came time to lay off some employees she decided to fire herself.
I know that sounds crazy but that is exactly what Lola Gonzalez did. Lola Gonzalez, owner of Accurate Background Check in Florida,decided when it came time to layoff employees, she could not let one of them go, so fired herself. I love her quote when asked why she would do this — it was the right thing to do. What a way to make decisions.
Now you are probably thinking, who will run the company? Her response when asked by her employees was, "I said, ‘You are. You are, and I trust you. They’ve taken ownership, and I do not regret what I’ve done, for a minute." Talk about employee empowerment! Too many companies micromanage employees, which leads to frustration, resentment, and a general decline in employee loyalty. Companies that define the job and expectations and then turn their employees loose to achieve those objectives, generally have higher levels of employee loyalty.
I think it is this trust that is lacking in many companies today. I am going to talk more about this in my next blog when I get into R.O.W.E. Some of you may have heard of R.O.W.E. before but if not, check in next week when I explain what it is and how it can impact a company.
