Employee Appreciation Day

Did you know it is Employee Appreciation Day?  Yeah, me either.  Apparently March 4th is Employee Appreciation Day and it has been since 1995. 

To all of you Senior Leaders out there, I hope you do appreciate your employees, because the fact is, about half of those currently employed in your company won’t be there by this time next year.  I know I have mentioned this numerous times but here is yet another study confirming that fact.  

What I found most fascinating with this article is not that half said they are considering leaving this year, I have seen that in other studies.  No, what I thought was interesting was almost a quarter said they have applied for a job in the past six months.   The best indicator of future behavior is past behavior and a quarter have applied for a job, so you can bet these employees will continue to apply for jobs, while another 20-30% of the employees start doing the same over the next six to eight months.

Where I  think this article gets a bit off track is the focus on recognition.  I have talked with Bob Nelson a couple of times, great guy and very bright, but the recognition thing is kind of his shtick.  So it is not surprising that all that is mentioned is recognition.  However, there are a few other things that enter into the equation, things like long-term career development, being treated fairly and with respect, feeling like you are part of something greater than yourself, etc.  I am not downplaying recognition because that is very important but it is not the only piece to solving this impending employee loyalty disaster.
